Marketing is the basic principle and heart beat of any company or organization. This is no different for an event organizing company. You need to market your business, your skills and your reputation in order to obtain business for your company. Sometimes for an event organizer, there is a fine line between marketing their business and marketing their skills. To market the business is very similar to marketing an entity, so it is rather impersonal. Whereas to market your skill is more on a personal level. Some clients may prefer you to be more personal as they feel that it is your artistic skills that they will be paying for.

Your artistic  skills and capabilities also go hand-in-hand with your reputation as an event designer. It is after  all your concept and ideas that are required to bring the event to life. So how would you market your skills and reputation to a client and secure the project for the company? In this case you could either be a business owner or you could be employed. So the suggestions below are two-fold, but the principle is the same. You could also be marketing yourself to get a job as a event designer for a company!

Basic steps to marketing your event skills

Here are some suggestions that you can use to market your skills and reputation, be it to secure the project or even to secure a job:

  • Build a portfolio – this means that you have to keep every record of your accomplished works, designs, client feedback as well as your qualifications and experiences. Have your portfolio well organized. Remember that though you may be a event designer, you still have to be organized enough to delegate and disseminate your instructions to others and keep track of what is being done. The more impressive the portfolio you have, the more likely that a client or company will be assured that you are capable enough for their projects.
  • Build a good knowledge base – means you have to know about different material types for prop construction, methods of design setup, latest trends and business practices. Aside from the designing itself, you are also required to have a good knowledge base of sound systems, lighting, special effects and even gifts and premiums. The wider your knowledge base the better your prospects
  • Fluent presentation – it always pays if you are a fluent presenter. It demonstrates that you know your products, you are confident and you are capable of getting the job done. To be a fluent presenter means that you talk well, have all your presentation portfolio ready and are well organized. You also know the market well, know the latest trends and practices and have at least some good working experiences with event management.

The most important skill

If you notice that the keyword is to be organized. As an  event management person, that is a designer or even an event planning crew, to be organized is a pre-requisite to getting things done without problems and meeting the delivery dateline. If you own an event management company or are an independent event designer, you might want to consider an event management system.
